Duncan & Duncan Giving Back to Community

ddlogoClariksville, TN --Duncan & Duncan Construction has been involved in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area since 1993 as general contractors and was earlier involved in home improvement since the 1970s.

The company is headed by Don R. Duncan, who got involved in construction as a way to pay off debt from medical bills following his son’s stroke in 1992.

“I am proud of what I do.  We build good houses.  We look for innovations for quality.  It is a business, you still have to be careful, but quality is important,” Duncan said explaining his philosophy on home building.

Duncan said he first built six to eight houses a year and then moved up to about 20 houses a year with a peak of 28 houses in one year.

Explaining how he got started, Duncan said his son, Warren, had a stroke in 1992.  He was seven at the time.  The family was told their only son would be incapable of learning and, at best, would only be able to feed himself.  Duncan and his wife, Debbie, made a commitment to continue therapy for 30 months even after insurance money ran out to help Warren’s recovery.  Now, at 24, Warren is involved in the construction business with his father.

Building houses in addition to his second and third shift job as a press room supervisor at Jostin’s Printing was a way for Duncan to help pay the medical bills.  Duncan retired from Jostin’s in 2007 after 25 years and began focusing fully on his construction business.

Duncan said he first helped build a house while in high school and took building trades before graduating high school in 1974.  He later earned a bachelor’s in business administration from Austin Peay State University in 1978.

“Our duty is to try to help people with some of the talents we have,” Duncan said.  “We had a need and the community stepped up to help us.”  Duncan said he was never behind on bills and many people gave money to help out while Warren was recovering.

Because people helped him so willingly in his family’s time of need, Duncan said he is sure people will help with this project as well.  “Getting the information out to people is the biggest challenge,” he said.  “When people find out about it, they will help.”

“We are asking the community to come together to help show some compassion for others,” he said.  “God has asked all of us to sacrifice a little for others.”
